Solowsky & Allen, P.L. Represents Plaintiffs in Lawsuits Against Opioid Manufacturers and Distributors

Each day on average more than 115 Americans die from overdosing on opioids, and thousands more struggle with addiction. The misuse of and addiction to opioids, including prescription pain relievers, heroin, and synthetic opioids, is a crisis that affects public health and social and economic welfare. The economic burden caused by opioid abuse in the United States is approximately $78.5 billion per year, including the costs of healthcare, lost productivity, addiction treatment, and the strain on the criminal justice system.

For years, manufacturers of prescription opioids grossly misrepresented the risks of long-term use of those drugs for persons with chronic pain, and distributors failed to properly monitor suspicious orders of those prescription drugs - all of which contributed to the current opioid crisis.

Richard L. Allen, Esq. and Lauren Kain Whaley, Esq. of Solowsky & Allen, P.L. and co-counsel have filed Complaints on behalf of several health plans against the major pharmaceutical companies and distributors responsible for the manufacturing, transmission, and sale of dangerous, highly addictive and often lethal prescription opioids. Solowsky & Allen, P.L. currently represents eight health plans in California who collectively serve more than 5 million members. One of the health plans represented by Solowsky & Allen, P.L., is the largest public health plan in the state of California, which alone has 2.2 million members.

Solowsky & Allen, P.L. has also filed suit against members of the Sackler family who are principals of the pharmaceutical company Purdue Pharma and knew about the dangers of opioids, yet pushed to sell increasing amounts of opioids for their own financial gain. Solowsky & Allen, P.L.’s opioid cases are part of the National Prescription Opiate Litigation, Case No. 1:17-MD-2804, which is a multidistrict litigation (MDL), pending in federal court in the Northern District of Ohio.

Richard Allen serves as lead trial counsel for these clients and also serves as a member of the Third Party Payor Executive Committee for the National Prescription Opiate Litigation.
