Each day on average more than 115 Americans die from overdosing on opioids, and thousands more struggle with addiction. The misuse of and addiction to opioids, including prescription pain relievers, heroin, and synthetic opioids, is a crisis that affects public health and social and economic welfare. The economic burden caused by opioid abuse in the United States is approximately $78.5 billion per year, including the costs of healthcare, lost productivity, addiction treatment, and the strain on the criminal justice system.
For years, manufacturers of prescription opioids grossly misrepresented the risks of long-term use of those drugs for persons with chronic pain, and distributors failed to properly monitor suspicious orders of those prescription drugs - all of which contributed to the current opioid crisis.
